A multi-faith peace conference was held at the Durban City Hall by the Minhaj-ul-Quran International South Africa on Sunday. The goal of the conference was to foster inter-faith tolerance, promote social cohesion and counter all forms of extremist tendencies as well as advocate for Human Rights.

The keynote speaker was world renowned Islamic scholar, Dr Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Al-Qadri who is also the chairman of the Supreme Council of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, which is one of the largest NGOs in South Asia.
Lifetime Achievement Awards were also be bestowed upon retired Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Natal, Bishop Rubin Phillips, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman and Mr AV Mahomed.
“The turn out could have been better had it not been a long weekend. People go out of town for family activities and holidays. Moreover, the road closures for the cycle race put off many people from attending. However, I am satisfied that we achieved our objectives which was to demonstrate that people of different religious persuasions and cultural backgrounds can work together for social cohesion and the upliftment of society. Religious leaders faith based communities played a critical role during the struggle against apartheid and need to continue being a catalyst in the fight against racism, xenophobia and societal challenges like poverty and crime,” said Moulana Rafeek Shah.
